What to Include in an Emergency Preparedness Kit

Although winter storms aren’t a realistic threat in Las Vegas, flash floods, fires, and other emergencies certainly are. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, having an emergency preparedness kit on-hand can help you and your family during natural disasters, black outs, biological and chemical threats, radiation emergencies and more.

Here’s a list of the 10 most important items to include in your family’s emergency preparedness kit:

1. Water: One gallon per person per day is the recommended amount.

2. Food: Have plenty of non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food items on hand. A seven-day supply is advised.

3. Flashlight: If the power goes out, a flashlight will be a necessity. Make sure you have plenty of extra batteries, too!

4. First aid kit: If anyone is injured during an emergency, a first aid kit is essential – especially one with a how-to manual.

5. Medications: If you or anyone in your family take important medications, make sure to include at least a seven-day supply of those medications.

6. Personal documents: All of your family’s personal documents – such as any passports, birth certificates, and extra cash – should be stored in a safe place that’s easy to access in the event of an emergency.

7. Multipurpose tool: A multipurpose tool, such as a knife, can serve a variety of purposes during a catastrophe, and should absolutely be part of an emergency preparedness kit. A wrench is also recommended for turning off utilities.

8. Whistle: Ready.gov recommends adding a whistle to your emergency preparedness kit that can be used to signal for help.

9. Cell phones: Having an emergency charger, or solar charger, will prove extremely helpful, as well.

10. Emergency radio: A battery-powered or hand-crank radio during an emergency can provide you with critical updates during a disaster.
